Thriller at De Anza caps tough week for Panthers

@ De Anza on Feb. 23: Loss 5-6

Hartnell dropped an 11-inning thriller at De Anza after exchanging the lead several times. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Hartnell right fielder Chase Lindemann (Saugus H.S.) tied the game 3-3 with a two-RBI single. Then sophomore second baseman Davin Kapuras (Pearl City H.S.) plated two more Panther runs with a single to right field. De Anza answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. After two more innings of scoreless ball, De Anza finally claimed a walk-off win in the bottom of the 11th. Hartnell starter Chris Wright (Trinity Christian H.S.) had his best outing of the spring, striking out four in 5 ⅓ innings and allowing just three runs. Lindemann, a freshman, went three for five at the plate, bringing in three runs.

 

Vs. Fresno City, game 2 on Feb. 18: Loss 4-0

The Panther bats were silenced during the back end of a home doubleheader as they were shut out by the Fresno City Rams pitching staff. Hartnell could only muster two hits on the day, from sophomores David Ortiz (King City H.S.) and Christian Onomura (Pearl City H.S.) Hartnell’s starting pitcher, sophomore Tommy Castro (Gilroy H.S.), continued his display of dominance, 5 ⅓ innings while striking out seven Ram batters and regaining the state strikeout lead.

 

Vs. Fresno City, game 1 on Feb. 18: Loss 6-1

Hartnell was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to perennial powerhouse Fresno City. Lindemann led the Panther offense, with two singles in three outings at the plate. Left-handed reliever Nolan Maldonado (Los Osos H.S.) was brilliant out of the bullpen, tossing 5 ⅓ innings of one-run ball while striking out seven Ram batters.
