Last week, the Men’s and Women’s Track & Field team hosted their annual Kids Track & Field camp. This year the team welcomed around 70 children ages 5 to 12. Hartnell Track & Field Head coach, Christopher Zepeda, led the camp along with 16 volunteer student-athletes. The week began with a quick introduction to all Track & Field events such as hurdles, long jump, shot put, pole vaulting and a 40-yard dash. For the first time this year, the camp included a quick introduction to kids pole vaulting! During the camp, children are encouraged to continue to practice and pursue the sport by rewarding them daily with “Camper of The Day” recognition for one boy and one girl. On the final day of the camp, kids compete in a track meet within their age group. There are six events and children have the opportunity to earn gold, silver, or bronze. “I am very appreciative of all the parents in the local area that sign up their kids for these camps,” said Coach Zepeda. “These camps generate a lot of revenue for the Track & Field program, thus you can say the kids are helping us, so we can help our student-athletes.” We hope to see more campers next year. Go Panthers!
