On February 10, 2017, Hartnell College Women's Basketball Team hosted their third home game for the spring season against De Anza College. Recovering from their major loss against Foothill College with a final score of 86-37 on February 8th, the Lady Panthers had prepared themselves for redemption. Not only had this been a time for redemption for the Lady Panthers, but a celebration of Breast Cancer for Cancer Awareness Day. The team sported their pink basketball socks to support the cause.
The first and second period had been led by Hartnell. Players such as Hartnell’s guard/forward Clarissa Serrano (#10) and Martha Grimes (#33) brought up the score with a few three pointer shots. “The Flash” Lannie Calunsag (#21), guard, snuck some shots in before De Anza could even blink. Although De Anza had been trailing closely behind Hartnell, the Lady Panthers were able to score their way to a 11-point lead, 32-21. The Lady Panthers were on fire! Unfortunately, De Anza stepped up their game. Forward Center Illyanna Hendricks (#30), stepped in during the third period to intercept some rebounds. Both teams played with intense energy and slight aggression that worked in their favor and against. As the fourth period clock got closer to zero, the Lady Panthers did not give up and moved down the court until the very last second. The De Anza College Dons took home the victory against the Lady Panthers with a score of 65-51. Even though the Lady Panthers lost against De Anza, they didn’t lose the spirit of the millions of women out there who have fought and are still fighting against cancer! And the game was dedicated to them.
